Ribera del Duero, Spain
Our Rating – ★★★★★
Aroma – Ripe red fruit, vanilla, licorice, leather background
Grape – Tempranillo
Taste – Ripe fruit compote, very ripe tannins, persistent finish
The area of Ribera del Duero is at high altitude for Spain. This ensures that the Tempranillo grape grows with an extra-thick skin, giving the final wine more colour, body, tannin and flavour than its cousin in Rioja. Smoky, oaky aromas of coconut combine with dense loganberry and elderberry on the nose. The palate is velvety smooth, savoury and full-bodied with concentrated flavours of damson, blackberry, liquorice and sweet spice with a touch of vanilla/cream. Warming and smooth with an amazingly lengthy finish, this is an excellent example of Ribera del Duero.
